How tight should I tighten my bottom bracket?

What causes a loose bottom bracket?

Most of the time, the true cause is a loose chainring bolt—tighten them up and that’ll quiet most creaks. After you check the chainring bolts and if you still hear the noise, look at your pedals, crank bolts, seatpost, and seat. By checking these first, you’ll save an hour of digging into your bottom bracket.5 days ago.

How do I know if my bottom bracket is loose?

How to spot a loose BB. Firmly hold the bike steady and attempt to move the crank from side to side – in the opposite plane of motion to its rotation. If there is any play from side to side, the BB system is loose. An open/loose BB will need its bearings adjusting (via the adjusting cup) or replacing.

Can a bottom bracket be too tight?

If the BB is too tight, it will not rotate without grinding or feeling stiff. In fact, if you ever tighten an adjustable (open/loose) BB to an extreme, the BB will not move at all. Tightness in a sealed BB is a sign that it is deteriorating and it will need to be replaced.

Should there be any play in the bottom bracket?

You are feeling for looseness or play in the cartridge sealed bearing BB. There shouldn’t be any. Usually, it’s as simple as something coming loose, like a cup or bearing, and tightening the bottom bracket will fix it. Sometimes it means the grease is completely used up and the bearings are wearing.

What happens if bottom bracket fails?

Eventually your bearings will disintegrate and your BB will lose its ability to hold the spindle centred withing the BB shell, that will result in the crankset becoming wobbly, your chain will come off, your chainring might even go hit your chainstay and if you’re lucky it will happen at low speed.

How long does a bottom bracket last?

They can get “brinneled” or damaged in a crash or something, but 1500 miles is absurd. As for a bottom bracket, on the low end, maybe 5000 miles. The basic Shimano one most people use (UN51/55/similar) can reasonably expect 10k+ miles. But sometimes you get unlucky and get a bottom bracket that lasts maybe 500 miles.

Should you upgrade bottom bracket?

Usually if both chainrings and the bottom bracket are worn out, you might as well upgrade to the new setup rather than buy all the parts for your old unit. Besides getting something that matches the rest of the parts, you’ll know you’re hammering on brand-new crankarms, too.

Does bottom bracket make a difference?

In addition, the average drag for all of the bottom brackets tested is just 0.77W. In other words, bottom brackets do different significantly drag-wise in terms of percentages but as far as actual watts are concerned, we’re talking relatively small numbers here that most general cyclists aren’t likely to notice.

How tight should crank arms be?

Registered. Most square taper crank arms should be 29 ft-lbs. That is pretty darn tight. As has been mentioned, if it came loose, the crank arm is likely damaged beyond repair already and needs to be replaced.

Are bottom brackets all the same size?

There are 4 widths available with BSA bottom brackets; 68mm, 73mm, 83mm or 100mm. For road bikes, a BSA bottom bracket is always 68 mm wide. Other sizes, and particularly the 73 mm width, is commonplace with mountain bikes. The 83 mm and 100 mm dimensions have become rare these days.

Can a bottom bracket be repaired?

Servicing them may be possible only if the design has the bearing seals exposed. Full one piece sealed cartridge style bottom brackets (octalink, square taper) are simply replace only. Depending on which sealed cartridge you have, you would need the appropriate tool to remove and replace them.

How do bottom brackets work?

The bottom bracket on a bicycle connects the crankset (chainset) to the bicycle and allows the crankset to rotate freely. It contains a spindle to which the crankset attaches, and the bearings that allow the spindle and crankset to rotate. The chainrings and pedals attach to the cranks.

Why is my crank moving side to side?

Your crank arm is loose as is slowly falling off. If you don’t tighten, it is only going to get worse. The “trick” is that you have to loosen it before you tighten it so that you can slide the arm back where it needs to be. So, on the crank arm, there should be two bolts.

When should crankset be replaced?

After 5,400 miles it is reasonable to replace the rear cassette and chain. The front chainrings may need replacing if they have been ridden with a wornout chain. The rest of the crank: the spindle cranks and spider should be fine. Sometimes it is cheaper to replace the whole crankset.

How often should you clean bottom bracket?

Every three months or so I’ll take the cranks out and if it’s a threaded bb, I’ll remove the bb and do the full service. Around the three month mark is normally enough time, even in the best conditions for dirt to work its way into the small gaps and contact points around the crankset and bottom bracket area.
